Ruben Amorim’s English Language Proficiency: A Comprehensive Assessment
Liverpool fans are eagerly anticipating the potential arrival of Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim as the successor to Jurgen Klopp. However, a crucial question remains: can the Portuguese coach speak English? Filling the shoes of one of Liverpool’s most successful and beloved managers of all time will undoubtedly be a tough task for whoever takes over from Klopp. A smooth transition is expected, with a solid foundation in place to continue building towards more silverware in the immediate future.
One of the most vital factors in achieving this success with the current squad is the ability to communicate effectively in English. So, is Amorim a fluent English speaker? The short answer is yes. Despite spending the majority of his playing and managerial career in his native Portugal, with a brief stint in Qatar, Amorim has demonstrated a strong command of the English language.
Amorim’s proficiency in English was evident when he fielded questions from English-speaking journalists after a 1-1 draw between Tottenham and Sporting in 2022. Not only did he not require a translator, but he also effortlessly understood and responded to various accents, including English, Northern Irish, and Australian. His fluency was evident as he laughed along with a question about VAR. Interestingly, his ability to understand the Ulster dialect should come as no surprise, as he acquired his coaching badges through a UEFA course in Belfast. In 2019, he worked alongside Luis Garcia under the Irish FA, collaborating with former Premier League players such as Gabby Agbonlahor, Bruno Saltor, and Craig Gardner.
Amorim hails from Lisbon and spent his formative years in the Portuguese capital. Interestingly, his accent bears a striking resemblance to that of Porto-born Liverpool player Diogo Jota. While Liverpool’s squad is diverse and multicultural, their common language remains English.
If Amorim is indeed appointed this summer, the 39-year-old coach would have no issues communicating with the Liverpool players and staff. His fluency in English, coupled with his footballing knowledge and experience, could prove to be a valuable asset in continuing the club’s success. With the foundation already in place, it remains to be seen whether Ruben Amorim will be the one to lead Liverpool into another era of greatness.
