Roy Keane criticises Christian Eriksen’s lack of physicality in Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City
Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday was a stark reminder of the gulf between the two sides. Pep Guardiola’s side delivered a dominant display at Old Trafford as two goals from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden’s tap-in from close range with 10 minutes remaining sealed the win for the Premier League champions.
The defeat is United’s fifth in the Premier League this season and the result leaves Erik ten Hag’s side eight points behind fourth-placed Liverpool after 10 games.
Former United captain Roy Keane believes Ten Hag’s side ‘are short in every aspect’ after their defeat to City and says he is ‘worried’ by the team’s poor physical presence. Asked if he wanted to see more from United, Keane said: ‘Yeah, of course. Different levels, the pace they play at, they control the ball. City weren’t even at their best.’
Keane highlighted Christian Eriksen in the build up to City’s third goal after the United midfielder easily allowed Rodri to get a shot on goal. ‘United are gone there, look at Eriksen,’ Keane said. ‘That’s the worry for me, the physical side of the game from United. I know the players have been run ragged and they’re tired in the season when you’re watching, but you can’t leave people walking past you.’
The result has left United in a precarious position in the Premier League table and Keane believes it will take a monumental effort for them to challenge for a Champions League spot this season. He said: ‘It’s almost… I wouldn’t say embarrassing, I do feel for the United players but listen, they are short in every aspect of it technically, tactically and worrying for me, physically, United look so off it, credit to Man City they’re an outstanding team. United… where do you start and where do you finish? Long way back for this team.’
United have now suffered five defeats in the Premier League this season and will need to find a way to bridge the gap between themselves and their rivals if they are to challenge for a top four spot. They have already lost to Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Leicester City this season and will need to find a way to turn their fortunes around if they are to make a late push for a Champions League spot.
