Roy Keane was unimpressed with West Ham’s performance at Old Trafford, criticising the London club’s defending for Manchester United’s equalising goal. The former United midfielder, who was on punditry duty with Ian Wright and Joe Cole, said the Hammers were having a discussion “like they’re in Starbucks” and that they needed to “come with violence”.

Keane was also critical of West Ham’s spurned chances at both 0-0 and 1-0, comparing them to Tottenham. He said: “They come, they get a bit giddy, they have opportunities. It’s loads of teams – not just West Ham but the Spurs’ of this world. They come to Old Trafford, they have a little bit of possession, one or two chances, get all excited and end up getting beaten.”

West Ham had been the better team in the first half, with Antonio spurning a huge chance at 0-0. Said Benrahma then scored a beauty after 54 minutes to give the Hammers the lead. However, United managed to turn the game around thanks to some impressive substitutions and Alejandro Garnacho’s stunning goal. Casemiro and Fred also scored late on to give the Red Devils a 3-1 victory and a place in the quarter-finals.

Keane was asked by presenter Mark Pougatch if United had “got away with one” and he responded: “Yeah they have. But they’ve earned the right. The manager’s made a huge gamble with all the changes, it looked like it was going to backfire. But they sorted themselves out, made one or two changes, started doing what they’re good at.”
