Roy Keane labels Mikel Arteta a ‘sore loser’ as Arsenal boss protests against decision for Gabriel Martinelli’s goal to be disallowed in defeat to Manchester United

Roy Keane has labelled Mikel Arteta a ‘sore loser’ following Arsenal’s defeat at Manchester United.

The Gunners suffered their first dropped points of the season with Antony’s debut strike and Marcus Rashford’s second-half brace inflicting a 3-1 defeat on them.

However, the match could have gone down a very different path had Gabriel Martinelli’s 12th-minute strike been allowed to stand.

The goal was initially given, however, referee Paul Tierney was advised to look at a Martin Odegaard challenge on Christian Eriksen which happened seconds before Martinelli beat David de Gea.

Replays show there was contact on Eriksen and Tierney concluded this was enough for the goal to be chalked off.

The likes of Perry Groves and Alan Shearer couldn’t believe the decision and Mikel Arteta was in disbelief.

Arteta told Sky Sports: “Today it is a foul and you could see the officials in the first actions, you could see there were strong tackles but no yellow cards because they wanted to raise the threshold because it’s a big game.

    “Really difficult to understand.”

Speaking to the BBC, he added: “The referee said it was a really soft decision – we just ask for consistency, today we disallowed the goal again, there is nothing we can unfortunately do now.”

But Keane was in no mood to hear the Arsenal manager’s complaints.

Keane told Sky Sports: “I’m fed up of all their excuses. I’m serious.

“Arteta gets interviewed after the game, he’s a sore loser, like us all.

“He’s got to give a little bit of credit to Man United but he never does. Every time he loses a game it’s all about what the opposition didn’t do properly or the officials. Stop making excuses.

“You lost the game 3-1, you’ve done okay. Take your plaudits but give me the points any day of the week.”
