Roy Keane took an unexpected swipe at Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, branding him ‘dreadful’, while he believes the west London club have a serious issue in the goalkeeper position. The Blues ended the campaign with a 1-1 draw against a heavily rotated Newcastle United team, leaving them in 12th place in the table on 44 points – both their worst finish in the Premier League as well as their lowest points total, and without European football next season.
Mauricio Pochettino is set to be named as the club’s new manager imminently but Keane fears the Argentine has a massive job on his hands and disagreed with fellow pundit Micah Richards when the latter suggested Chelsea would be top-four contenders once again next season. Jamie Carragher interjected, asking who these players were, to which Richards responded: ‘Reece James will be back fit. Fofana will come back into his own, he had a big knee injury.’ Keane was stunned by this, saying: ‘Who?! He’s been dreadful, he’s been dreadful!’
Carragher also pointed out that James is always injured and that Chelsea need to find a new number one. Keane agreed, saying: ‘The goalkeeper is a problem. They need a goalkeeper.’ Edouard Mendy started the season as Chelsea’s number one but his form fell off and he was also hampered by injuries, while Kepa Arrizabalaga has fared little better, making a number of gaffes and failing to keep a clean sheet in his last eight appearances. Chelsea have been linked with a summer swoop for Inter’s Andre Onana among others.
