Arsenal Stun Manchester United With Late Drama at the Emirates
Arsenal picked up a dramatic 3-1 win over Manchester United at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon, with Declan Rice scoring his first Arsenal goal in injury time to seal the three points.
The Gunners had been ahead through Martin Odegaard, but Marcus Rashford had put United ahead before the late drama. Roy Keane admitted that Arsenal just about deserved the win, while Mikel Arteta was beaming after the victory.
VAR Controversy
The game was level at 1-1 when Alejandro Garnacho saw a goal disallowed for the narrowest of offsides, then Arsenal struck. Declan Rice scored in the 96th minute to send the Emirates wild and then Gabriel Jesus netted two minutes later to seal the three points.
Manchester United had been ahead through Marcus Rashford, but his first half strike was cancelled out within a minute through Martin Odegaard. Arsenal had dominated before that Rashford goal and were certainly in control of the match for much longer than United were over the piece.
Roy Keane’s Reaction
Red Devils legend Keane felt the late defeat was harsh after a decent performance from his former side, but did concede that Arsenal deserved the win…just about.
“That’s tough but this us top level football. Credit to both teams and both managers, they both went to try and win the football match. Their subs were very attack-minded. Maybe they just about deserved it, maybe just about, but it’s tough on United.”
Mikel Arteta’s Reaction
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was beaming after the victory, admitting that the game could have gone either way.
“We work and do everything we do every day for moments like this. This is sport at the top level, it is about the small margins. It could have gone either way.”
Conclusion
It was a memorable contest in north London, with some VAR controversy, but mostly thanks to the drama at the death. Roy Keane admitted that Arsenal just about deserved to beat Manchester United after the Gunners picked up a dramatic, late 3-1 win at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
