For the first time since tearing his Achilles tendon, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has provided a vague timeline for his potential return. During his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers hinted that he could be back on the field in six weeks.
Speculation Sparks After Postgame Comment
Rodgers sparked speculation about his return after the Jets’ 27-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. During postgame handshakes, he told Chargers safety Derwin James that he intends to play in “a few weeks.” The comment was caught on camera and quickly went viral.
Downplaying the Remark
A day later, Rodgers attempted to downplay his remark, stating that he was joking with James. He clarified that a return in a couple of weeks is not a realistic timeline.
A Six-Week Return?
Pressed further, Rodgers dropped a hint by mentioning “fortnights,” which refers to two weeks. If he were to return in six weeks, it would take him to Christmas week when the Jets host the Washington Commanders on Dec. 24.
An Unprecedented Return
If Rodgers were to return in six weeks, it would be an unprecedented comeback from an Achilles injury for an NFL player. Despite this, Rodgers has repeatedly expressed his goal of playing again this season.
Coach Saleh’s Response
Jets coach Robert Saleh declined to comment on whether Rodgers has shared a projected timeline with him. However, he acknowledged that Rodgers is working hard to make a comeback.
Clearance and Risk-Reward
Before Rodgers can return, he would need to be cleared by doctors and receive approval from the Jets. This decision poses a significant risk-reward choice for the team.
Markers and Practice
Rodgers mentioned the need to hit certain markers and return to practice before he can consider getting back on the field. He emphasized that there are still several steps he must take in his recovery process.
The “Danger Zone”
Rodgers acknowledged that he is entering the final healing stage for his tendon, which he refers to as the “danger zone.” Pushing too hard could result in a setback, so he must proceed with caution.
Playoff Contenders
Rodgers stated that the Jets would need to be playoff contenders for him to consider playing again this season. Currently, the offense has struggled without him, scoring only eight touchdowns.
Overall, Rodgers remains optimistic about his potential return but understands the importance of being healthy and fully recovered before stepping back onto the field.
