Robbie Savage described David de Gea’s performance as ‘terrible’ and ‘awful’ after Manchester United were knocked out of the Europa League by Sevilla. United were hoping to book their place in the semi-finals on Thursday night but left Spain disappointed as Sevilla stormed to a 3-0 lead. Manchester United had been the better team in the first leg but two late own goals let Sevilla escape with a 2-2 draw. Sevilla, fuelled by a raucous Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, took an early lead in the second leg through Youssef En-Nesyri, who pounced on an intercepted Harry Maguire pass. The hosts extended their lead in the tie shortly after half-time through a Loic Bade, before De Gea gifted En-Nesyri his second goal and Sevilla a third as he failed to control a through ball.

Having largely impressed under Erik ten Hag and lifting the League Cup earlier this season, Manchester United were expected to prove too strong for Sevilla. But the Premier League club were stunned by six-time winners Sevilla on what Savage described as a ‘terrible night’ for United and De Gea. ‘I’m lost for words, lost for words,’ Savage said on BT Sport commentary when Sevilla scored their third goal. ‘What on earth are United doing? What is David de Gea trying to do there? What is that technique? It’s so bad. It’s a terrible night for Manchester United and a terrible night for David de Gea. It’s awful.’ After Sevilla doubled their lead on the night through Bade’s seemingly innocuous header, Savage said: ‘I don’t know what David de Gea is doing. The header is right above him! He doesn’t do well enough. It’s right above him. I think the goalkeeper has to do better there personally.’

Manchester United will look to bounce back on Sunday when they face in-form Premier League rivals Brighton in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Following the Sevilla setback, Ten Hag said: ‘This was a great opportunity, a great occasion, to win something and we gave it away – we have to blame ourselves. It’s gone, we can’t change it. We have to look forward to Sunday, that’s the next opportunity.’ Despite having largely impressed under Erik ten Hag and lifting the League Cup earlier this season, Manchester United were stunned by six-time winners Sevilla in the Europa League on Thursday night.
