This comes after Ronaldo recently made a series of astonishing claims about the Red Devils during a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

A United statement read: “Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.

“The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”

Ronaldo’s former teammate Ferdinand, who is working as a World Cup analyst on TV, believes the arrangement is the best thing for all parties.

Speaking on BBC Sport, Ferdinand said: “I think both parties will be delighted now.

“I think he obviously done that interview with the mindset that he wanted to get out of the football club. He wasn’t happy. He made it very clear.

“I also think [manager] Erik ten Hag has got what he wanted as well. In this situation, both parties are happy, move on, next chapter for Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Asked where Ronaldo could go next, Ferdinand added: “I don’t know, it depends what the motivation is. Is it Champions League? Money? Continue to play somewhere with a nice climate?

“Still a lot to pan out about what’s gone on behind the scenes but I’m sure we’ll find out in due course.”

It has also emerged that Ronaldo will not be getting any compensation for the remaining months left on his contract.
