Mason Mount’s Slow Start at Manchester United Blamed on Erik ten Hag
Mason Mount’s move to Manchester United from Chelsea earlier this summer was initially heralded, but the England playmaker has failed to impress in his opening two Premier League matches for the Red Devils. In both matches, Mount has been substituted in the second half, and Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Erik ten Hag is to blame for the concerning start to life Mount has made at the club.
Mount possesses many of the qualities that Ten Hag was searching for in a midfielder, such as the ability to play in a high press. But, after a mixed pre-season in which he was played in a variety of different positions, Mount’s failed to live up to expectations.
Ten Hag’s Misuse of Mount
Ferdinand says Ten Hag’s misuse of the player and failure to give him a settled role has produced those displays. ‘You can’t judge a man after two games, you can’t, because there’d be players who became legends who wouldn’t have been legends if they’d been judged after two games and told to get out,” the former United defender said on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube show.
Look at the Chelsea team in recent years, all the players coming in, it’s hard to perform in that team because it’s so all over the place. The team at the moment isn’t playing well enough for individuals. The team isn’t playing well enough yet, so that comes under the manager, 100%. He’s got to get the team playing right. We have to see where he [Mason] fits in. I don’t know where he was brought in to play yet.”
Mount’s Future at Manchester United
It remains to be seen if Ten Hag can find a way to get the best out of Mount and help him reach his full potential at Manchester United. The club have invested heavily in the England international and will be hoping he can become an integral part of their team for years to come.
For now, Ten Hag must focus on finding a way to get the best out of Mount and ensure he is given a settled role in the team. If he can do that, then Mount could become an important player for Manchester United and help them challenge for major honours once again.
