Reece James comments on Ivan Toney’s Instagram post following Brentford’s win over Man City after both were left out of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, as Chelsea defender also likes tweet on England selection

Reece James channelled his inner Jose Mourinho as he reacted to Ivan Toney’s double against Manchester City.

The Brentford star, who was left out of Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad, scored twice at the Etihad Stadium in a shock 2-1 victory for the Bees.

It was the perfect response from the striker, who took to social media after the match where he posted a picture of himself with his fingers in his ears.

James was quick to post on Toney’s Instagram upload, where he copied Mourinho’s words he used after Chelsea’s defeat to Aston Villa in March 2014.

He simply stated: “If I speak I’m in big trouble.”

Like Toney, James was also left out of Southgate’s 26-man squad for Qatar after suffering a knee injury.

But the Blues right-back appears to have been left aggrieved at missing out, with injured Kyle Walker and the returning Kalvin Phillips included.

James has liked a tweet on Twitter where Paul Merson questioned why Southgate failed to name the ex-Wigan loanee.

Merson said: “I just find it weird that Gareth Southgate is willing to gamble on Kalvin Phillips and Kyle Walker but not Reece James?

“If it was Harry Kane, he would be going – what’s the difference?”

Toney responded on his Three Lions snub after his dazzling display against Pep Guardiola’s side.

He told BT Sport: “The only thing is just to keep doing well, keep doing my best, keep doing well for the team and who knows what could happen.

“Obviously there’s disappointment, but I know what I’m capable of and I won’t let it put me down.

“I just keep going and keep doing well for Brentford.

“My motivation is the boys in the dressing room and the fans.

“When we work hard, this is what we can do.”
