Ray Parlour says ‘there’s something wrong’ at Arsenal if Mikel Arteta still can’t deliver Premier League top four return after signing ‘proven winners’

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour says ‘there’s something wrong’ at the club if they don’t secure a top four finish this season.

Manager Mikel Arteta is under pressure to deliver a return to Champions League football after another summer of big spending, resulting in the strongest Gunners side on paper for years.

Arsenal have spent around £75million to land Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Man City this summer, and both new arrivals are set to be given their debuts for the club in Friday night’s season opener at Crystal Palace – LIVE and FREE on talkSPORT.

Parlour has been hugely impressed by his former club’s summer business, saying Arteta has added ‘proven winners’ to his squad which will make a big difference in their quest to improve on last term’s fifth place finish.

But, with a hint of pessimism creeping in, the Invincibles hero admits another top four failure will hint at a deeper-lying problem at Arsenal than the quality of players on the pitch.

“There’s pressure on every manager in the Premier League, but there’s more pressure on Arteta,” Parlour told the talkSPORT Breakfast.

“Arsenal just failed last season, and they spent loads of money this summer.

“So something is going wrong at the club if they’re getting the right players in and they’re still not winning games.

“I’m always optimistic with Arsenal, but they always seem to do something wrong, something goes wrong during the season and it all goes pear-shaped.

“But, I think the signings have been very good, I must admit. Jesus is a fantastic signing, Zinchenko, these are proven winners.

“But Arteta understands the pressure he’s under. He is a player who has been there and he’s been under managers who are under pressure, so he knows he’s under pressure to get in the top four.

“There is pressure on every manager. Conte is under pressure at Spurs to get a trophy… that’s the whole point of being a football manager. They are realistic people, they’re on good money and they know they’ve got to deliver every single season.

“I think Arteta is very confident of what Arsenal will achieve this season, and if the manager is confident, the players will go into the season confident as well.”
