Varane Finds a New Club in Serie A
Raphael Varane, the French defender, has secured a new club following his departure from Manchester United. After his contract expired at the end of June, Varane spent a month as a free agent before finalizing his move. The newly-promoted Serie A side, Como, has confirmed that Varane has signed a two-year deal with the option of extending it for another year. Excitingly, he may make his debut as early as Monday, as Como is set to face Al-Hilal in a friendly match in Austria.
Varane’s time at Manchester United saw him make 95 appearances, scoring one goal and winning two trophies. However, injuries plagued the 31-year-old throughout his tenure in England, causing him to miss a total of 48 matches. Despite these setbacks, Varane’s talent and experience make him a valuable addition to any team.
In Italy, Varane will have the opportunity to join forces with former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Fabregas, who ended his playing career with Como in 2023, now serves as their under-19 manager. Furthermore, he was recently appointed as the club’s assistant manager, working alongside Osian Roberts as Como achieved promotion to Serie A last season. As of now, Fabregas has taken on the role of manager himself, signing a four-year deal that extends until the summer of 2028.
Como’s inclusion in the top-flight for the upcoming season marks their return after a 21-year absence. The team boasts a diverse squad, including former Premier League stars Pepe Reina, Alberto Moreno, and Patrick Cutrone. Additionally, esteemed football legend Thierry Henry has invested in the club, becoming a minority owner in 2022.
Varane’s move to Como presents an exciting new chapter in his career. Playing in Serie A will test his skills against some of the world’s best players and provide him with an opportunity to contribute to Como’s success in their long-awaited return to top-flight football. As he joins forces with Fabregas and the talented squad at Como, fans eagerly anticipate witnessing the impact Varane will make in Italian football.
