Frank Leboeuf Dismisses Raphael Varane’s Claims That Manchester United Can Win Champions League
Raphael Varane recently made headlines when he proclaimed that Manchester United can win the Champions League this season. However, former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has dismissed Varane’s claims, insisting that United are still playing as a collection of individuals rather than a team.
United marked their return to Europe’s premier competition with a 4-3 defeat away to Bayern Munich a fortnight ago, hosting Galatasaray at Old Trafford on Tuesday night. Despite scoring three times in Germany, Erik ten Hag’s side were second best throughout with their worrying Premier League form doing little to improve their prospects.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Varane, a veteran of four Champions League successes with Real Madrid, proclaimed United can win the competition this season. ‘Yes, I think so. The quality is in the squad,’ Varane said.
Frank Leboeuf Dismisses Varane’s Optimistic Claims
Former Chelsea defender Leboeuf however described Varane’s optimistic claims as ‘sad’, insisting United are still play as collection of individuals rather than a team. ‘It is all individuals, you recognise they are internationals, top players,’ he told ESPN.
‘But it is up to ten Hag to find the chemistry to make sure they can work together. It is hard to understand why those talented players cannot work together. Last year it was already a thing, Rashford was so outstanding last season and was saving United from maybe a bad result to win because of his talent and his pace and capability of changing results. But you already see weaknesses in that squad. It is very sad when I hear Varane saying United can win the Champions League. Yes it is media talk but no they can’t win the Champions League If they keep playing that way because they are not united.’
Can Manchester United Win The Champions League This Season?
It remains to be seen if Manchester United can turn their fortunes around and make a deep run in the Champions League this season. While they have some of the best players in the world, it will take more than individual talent to win the competition. It will take a team effort and a strong mentality to get past the best teams in Europe.
The Red Devils have had a rocky start to the season and it will take some time for them to find their footing. With the right attitude and determination, however, they could surprise everyone and make a run for the title. Only time will tell if Varane’s prediction will come true.
