Carson Wentz to Start for Los Angeles Rams Against San Francisco 49ers
Carson Wentz has been named the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams in their upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Sean McVay made the announcement on Wednesday, explaining that this decision gives Matthew Stafford an extra week of rest before the wild-card round.
Excitement surrounds Wentz’s opportunity, as McVay expressed his confidence in the quarterback. However, McVay also acknowledged the challenges of balancing the needs of the entire team when making such decisions. Despite the lack of a perfect solution, the Rams felt that this was the best course of action.
In addition to Wentz, the Rams will also rest key players such as receiver Cooper Kupp, running back Kyren Williams, defensive tackle Aaron Donald, and inside linebacker Ernest Jones due to injuries. Tight end Tyler Higbee and offensive lineman Joe Noteboom will also miss the game due to their respective injuries.
McVay emphasized that the Rams’ decision was not influenced by playoff seeding considerations. Currently holding the No. 6 seed, a loss to the 49ers and a win by the Packers over the Bears would result in dropping to the No. 7 seed.
Furthermore, rookie receiver Puka Nacua, who is just 29 yards away from breaking the all-time rookie receiving record, will have an opportunity to achieve this milestone. McVay expressed his desire to see Nacua accomplish something special while also ensuring his well-being.
Wentz joined the Rams as a free agent during their Week 10 bye. Although he has not played significant minutes this season, he has been actively involved in practice and on the sidelines during games. McVay humorously noted Wentz’s energetic presence during their victory over the Washington Commanders in Week 15.
This game against the 49ers will mark Wentz’s first chance to showcase his skills on the field in 2024. After stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Commanders, Wentz is now on his fourth team in as many seasons.
Last season, Wentz started seven games for the Commanders, throwing for 1,755 yards with 11 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and an 80.2 passer rating. Dresser Winn, who was part of the team during training camp, has been signed to the practice squad and will serve as Wentz’s backup.
