Los Angeles Rams Sign Quarterback Carson Wentz as Backup for Injured Matthew Stafford
The Los Angeles Rams have made a significant move by signing quarterback Carson Wentz to serve as a backup for the injured Matthew Stafford, according to a source close to the team. This decision was made during the Rams’ bye week, allowing Wentz ample time to familiarize himself with the team’s offensive system.
Stafford’s Injury and Replacement
Matthew Stafford sustained a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb during the Rams’ Week 8 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. As a result, he was unable to play in the following week’s game against the Green Bay Packers. In his absence, quarterback Brett Rypien took over and completed 46.4% of his passes for 130 yards and an interception in his Week 9 start.
However, the Rams have decided to waive Rypien on Tuesday, indicating their confidence in Carson Wentz as the backup quarterback.
Carson Wentz’s Background
Carson Wentz spent the 2022 season with the Washington Commanders but was released in February despite having two years remaining on his contract. He was initially traded to Washington by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 after losing his starting job to Jalen Hurts.
Wentz was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles as the No. 2 pick in the 2016 draft, the same year the Rams traded up to secure Jared Goff as their No. 1 pick.
The Washington Commanders acquired Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts in 2022 by trading two third-round picks and swapping second-round picks. However, his time with Washington was short-lived, and now he finds himself joining the Los Angeles Rams as a backup quarterback.
