Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will not play in Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears due to his back injury, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday.
Garoppolo did not practice on Wednesday because of the injury, which he sustained in Las Vegas’ Week 6 victory over the New England Patriots.
Sunday’s game at Chicago will likely feature backup quarterbacks starting for both the Raiders (3-3) and Bears (1-5). Bears quarterback Justin Fields is doubtful to start because of a dislocated thumb, putting rookie Tyson Bagent in line to start. Brian Hoyer relieved Garoppolo last Sunday, however, rookie Aidan O’Connell started for the Raiders in their Week 4 loss at the Los Angeles Chargers when Garoppolo was sidelined with a concussion.
Garoppolo was injured during the Raiders’ final first-half drive but stayed in the game. He was in obvious pain in the huddle as he grabbed at his lower right back. After he did not return to the field after halftime — he left in an ambulance still wearing his game pants — the Raiders listed him as out with a back injury.
He had led the Raiders to a 13-3 halftime lead, but Hoyer played the second half. Hoyer was 6 of 10 for 102 yards against the Patriots, including a 48-yard pass to rookie receiver Tre Tucker on third-and-4 that was the Raiders’ longest play from scrimmage this season.
In five games, Garoppolo has passed for 1,079 yards while completing 68.0% of his passes with seven touchdowns and an NFL-high eight interceptions for a passer rating of 82.6 and a Total QBR of 48.3.

The Las Vegas Raiders will be without their starting quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, in their upcoming game against the Chicago Bears. Garoppolo is sidelined due to a back injury he sustained in the Raiders’ Week 6 victory over the New England Patriots. This news comes from a source close to the team, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Thursday.
Garoppolo did not participate in practice on Wednesday, indicating the severity of his injury. The Raiders will now have to rely on their backup quarterbacks to lead the team against the Bears. The Bears, on the other hand, are also facing quarterback issues, with Justin Fields being doubtful to start due to a dislocated thumb. This puts rookie Tyson Bagent in line to start for the Bears.
Last Sunday, Brian Hoyer replaced Garoppolo after his injury against the Patriots. Hoyer had a decent performance, completing 6 of 10 passes for 102 yards. He connected with rookie receiver Tre Tucker for a 48-yard pass, which was the Raiders’ longest play from scrimmage this season. However, in a previous game against the Los Angeles Chargers, rookie Aidan O’Connell started for the Raiders when Garoppolo was sidelined with a concussion.
Garoppolo’s injury occurred during the Raiders’ final first-half drive against the Patriots. Despite being in obvious pain and grabbing at his lower right back, Garoppolo continued to play. However, he did not return to the field after halftime and left in an ambulance while still wearing his game pants. The Raiders officially listed him as out with a back injury.
Garoppolo has been a key player for the Raiders this season, leading them to a 3-3 record. In five games, he has passed for 1,079 yards with a completion rate of 68.0%. He has thrown seven touchdowns but also has the highest number of interceptions in the NFL with eight. His passer rating stands at 82.6, and his Total QBR is 48.3.
The absence of Garoppolo will undoubtedly impact the Raiders’ offensive strategy and overall performance. The team will have to rely on their backup quarterbacks to step up and fill the void left by their starting quarterback. It remains to be seen how the Raiders will adjust their game plan and whether they can secure a victory against the Bears without Garoppolo.
In conclusion, Jimmy Garoppolo’s back injury will force him to sit out the upcoming game against the Chicago Bears. The Raiders will have to rely on their backup quarterbacks to lead the team in Garoppolo’s absence. This injury adds to the quarterback woes faced by both teams, as the Bears are also dealing with Justin Fields’ dislocated thumb. The outcome of the game will depend on how well the backup quarterbacks can perform under pressure.
