QPR Co-Owner Tony Fernandes Sells Shares After 12 Years

After 12 years of involvement with Queens Park Rangers (QPR), co-owner Tony Fernandes has made the decision to sell all of his shares in the club. Fernandes, who bought the West London club in 2012, stepped down from his role as chairman six years ago but chose to retain his shares. However, he has now decided to move on to a new chapter in his life.

Fernandes expressed his gratitude for his time at QPR, stating, “Outside of family, I have experienced some of the most enjoyable moments of my life thanks to QPR.” He highlighted the team’s special victories and their promotion to the Premier League at Wembley Stadium as particularly memorable moments. Fernandes also commended QPR’s reputation as a true community club, which he has always been proud of.

The decision to sell his shares was not an easy one for Fernandes, as he admitted, “This decision to step away is made with a heavy heart.” He expressed his appreciation for the supporters who have been with him throughout the last decade and assured them that he will continue to follow QPR’s results. Fernandes also wished the board nothing but success for the future.

Fernandes initially bought QPR in 2012 alongside business partners Ruben Gnanalingam and Kamarudin Meranun. During his tenure, he oversaw the team’s Great Escape in 2012, ensuring their survival in the Premier League. He also played a key role in their promotion back to the Premier League during the 2013-14 season. Fernandes looks back fondly on his time at Loftus Road and expressed his continued support for the club.

Gnanalingam, QPR’s majority shareholder, expressed his sadness at Fernandes’ departure. He stated, “This is a sad day for the club, and for me in particular because Tony and I joined the club together.” Gnanalingam acknowledged the incredible moments they experienced together, including their Premier League survival in 2012 and their play-off success in 2014. He also emphasized Fernandes’ good intentions for the club, which can never be doubted.

QPR recently finished the 2022-23 Championship season in 20th place, narrowly avoiding relegation by six points. The team, led by manager Gareth Ainsworth, will begin the new campaign on August 5 with an away match against Watford at Vicarage Road.

As Tony Fernandes’ departure from QPR unfolds, fans and stakeholders will be eager to see how this change will impact the club’s future. With his passion and dedication, Fernandes has left a lasting legacy at QPR, and his presence will be missed. However, the board and supporters remain hopeful for the club’s continued success moving forward.
