Puskas Award could be won by a Tottenham player for a third year in a row after Richarlison’s stunner for Brazil at World Cup named among the nominees for the best goal of 2022

A Tottenham player could win the Puskas Award for the third year in a row after Richarlison’s goal for Brazil at the World Cup was nominated.

The 25-year-old scored a stunning overhead kick against Serbia – his second goal of the match as the Selecao ran out 2-0 winners in the group stage clash.

Vinicius Jr clipped the ball into the striker, who managed to control it with a fine touch before jumping into the air where he delivered a perfect scissor kick that flew past Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

If Richarlison wins the Puskas Award, it would mean that Tottenham have had a player scoop the trophy three times in a row.

Erik Lamela won last year’s award with a jaw-dropping rabona goal against Arsenal back in March 2021 when stadiums were empty because of lockdown.

And the year before that, Heung-min Son bagged the trophy with his fantastic solo effort against Burnley where he picked up the ball just outside his own box before running through several defenders and netting past Nick Pope.

Richarlison’s effort was named as one of the best goals at the World Cup – but the Brazilian’s was not the only one nominated for the Puskas Award from the Qatar competition.

Kylian Mbappe’s volley against Argentina in the final has also been shortlisted.

It was his second goal in as many minutes with his brace sending the game to extra-time and penalties where France went on to lose.

Other entries include AC Milan star Theo Hernandez, who scored a similar goal to Son’s in 2020 when he ran through the Atalanta team before scoring with his left foot.

Mario Balotelli has also been nominated after dazzling Goztepe defenders with some stepovers before scoring a rabona kick, much like Lamela in 2021.

And England’s Lioness star Alessia Russo is among the entrees after her beautiful backheel goal against Sweden in the Women’s Euro semi-final.

Meanwhile Polish amputee Marcin Oleksy is also in the running after he scored an incredible overhead kick for Warta Poznan.

The winner of the Puskas Award will be announced at the The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony on February 27.
