The sports presenter on some surprise Carabao Cup semi-finalists and Brighton’s quest for Europe.

    It’s Southampton v Newcastle tonight in a rather unexpected semi-final line-up?

Yes – and that’s good. There are at least two teams you wouldn’t have expected in the semis (with Nottingham Forest also involved). Look at Southampton’s win over Man City in the last round, which surprised everyone. They’re bottom of the Premier League but will feel anything can happen – if you can beat City, why not Newcastle? That was the shock of the competition so far and it’s great to see Southampton in the semis.

Newcastle’s last major trophy was the 1969 Fairs Cup. Can Eddie Howe end that run?

What a transformation – they have been unrecognisable from last season. Nick Pope has been one of, if not the best, of Howe’s signings and you struggle to see how Southampton might beat him as they don’t have the best record in front of goal. Newcastle fans are just desperate for a trophy and it would be a brilliant way to cap the work Howe has done by getting to Wembley.

Forest face Manchester United tomorrow. Has Steve Cooper impressed you?

I was delighted they kept him as manager when things were precarious – they didn’t need more change – but they continue to sign players. But Cooper has got them playing better of late, they are 13th and been on a pretty decent run, unbeaten in eight at home. They will be targeting finishing the game with something to hold on to for the second leg at Old Trafford.

And your team Brighton are sixth. Can Albion continue this amazing campaign and beat some of the big guns to a European place?

I was watching football with my dad on Sunday and we were saying how ridiculous it is that we are sixth! We started the season so well under Graham Potter and it does feel even more believable that we could do it under Roberto De Zerbi, who seems to have solved the problem we had, which was scoring goals. We’re so much fun to watch. It does feel like a real opportunity for one or two of Brighton, Brentford and Fulham to get into Europe this season.

Jules Breach will present EFL Carabao Cup highlights from this week’s semi-final, first-leg ties tomorrow at 10.30pm on ITV4
