Since its inception in the early 1990s, the Premier League has become the most beloved domestic football league in the world. With an estimated three billion viewers tuning in each season, it is no surprise that Premier League clubs have been able to rake in millions of pounds in TV and sponsorship deals. The first Premier League season was in 1992/93 and featured 22 clubs; the top 19 teams from the previous season’s First Division along with the top two and play-off winners from the Second Division. Manchester United were the inaugural champions, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s men finishing the season ten points clear of second-placed Aston Villa. The 22-club format remained until the 1995/96 season when the number of teams was reduced to 20. The Premier League was established as a limited company after 20 First Division clubs resigned from the Football League en masse in February 1992. The Premier League was given commercial independence from the Football League and The FA, allowing it to freely negotiate its own broadcast and sponsorship arrangements. In total, 50 clubs have competed in the Premier League since it was founded and the only clubs to have played in every season are Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham.
