Premier League Rivals Eyeing Last-Minute January Transfer for England Star
In the midst of the January transfer window, Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest are engaged in talks over a potential last-minute transfer for England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. The 30-year-old shot-stopper could be tempted by a £15 million move to Forest, which would offer him regular starts and boost his hopes of making the Euro 2024 squad.
Currently, Johnstone is struggling to secure the number one spot at Crystal Palace, with former Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson occupying the position. Despite being content at Selhurst Park, Johnstone is eager for more playing time to maintain his place in the Three Lions’ squad. Henderson took over from Johnstone after the latter suffered an injury last month and has held onto the starting position for the past six Premier League games.
Crystal Palace is keen on retaining Johnstone, as his contract runs until 2027. However, a tempting offer of £12-£15 million from Nottingham Forest could sway the decision. Forest, however, face financial constraints that limit their spending ability. They may need to sell midfielder Orel Mangala, who is valued at £20 million and is reportedly a target for Napoli, in order to make an acceptable bid for Johnstone.
It is worth noting that Wolverhampton Wanderers were also monitoring Johnstone’s situation in December. Their interest arose due to concerns over potentially losing Portuguese goalkeeper Jose Sa. However, Sa decided to remain at Molineux, leaving Forest and Palace as the main contenders for Johnstone’s signature.
As the transfer deadline looms closer, all eyes are on whether Nottingham Forest can negotiate a deal for Sam Johnstone. The goalkeeper’s desire for regular playing time and his ambitions of representing England in Euro 2024 make this potential transfer an intriguing prospect. Only time will tell if Forest can meet the financial requirements and secure the services of the talented shot-stopper.
