Premier League Manager Expresses Frustration at Assistant Referee’s ‘Disrespectful’ Sandwich Consumption
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was left seething after his team’s 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace on Tuesday. The 56-year-old berated an assistant referee for eating a sandwich during the match, considering it a sign of disrespect. Wilder expressed his frustration at the number of decisions that went against his team, claiming that “every 50/50 or tight decision” seemed to favor their opponents.
Wilder’s disappointment was further amplified when he approached referee Tony Harrington after the game, only to be met with a surprising response from Harrington’s assistant. Describing the encounter, Wilder told BBC Sport, “I’ve been to see the referee, I’ve told him that [every decision went against Sheffield United]. One of his assistants was eating a sandwich at the time and I thought that was a complete lack of respect. Hopefully, he was enjoying his sandwich while talking to a Premier League manager.”
The match itself saw Sheffield United take an early lead through Ben Brereton Diaz, who scored just 20 seconds into the game. However, Crystal Palace fought back, with Eberechi Eze equalizing in the 17th minute. James McAtee quickly restored Sheffield United’s advantage, but Eze struck again with a fantastic goal into the top-left corner at the half-hour mark. Michael Olise then sealed the vital win for Palace in the second half.
After the match, Wilder did not hold back in criticizing the referee’s performance. He described it as “yet another ridiculous performance” and revealed that he had been warned by a Premier League referee, whom he has known for a long time, that every tight decision would go against his team. Wilder pointed out several incidents during the game that he felt were wrongly judged, including two bookings for his players that he believed were unwarranted. He also mentioned an incident where the Palace player collided with their goalkeeper, resulting in a change of goalkeepers, but the player escaped a booking.
Wilder’s frustration extended beyond the decisions made on the pitch. He expressed his disappointment with the slow pace of the game and the time-wasting tactics employed by Crystal Palace. Wilder emphasized the importance of referees speeding up the game and ensuring better game management, referencing a conversation he had with former referee Howard Webb.
It remains to be seen whether Sheffield United will continue to face these seemingly unfavorable decisions throughout the rest of the season. However, Wilder’s strong stance against what he perceives as unjust treatment from officials highlights the passion and dedication he has for his team. As Sheffield United looks to bounce back from this defeat, it is clear that their manager will not remain silent when it comes to defending his players and demanding fair play on the pitch.
