That’s according to the Evening Standard, who add that this is part of a rejig of the club’s academy.

This comes after the appointment of ex-Manchester City and Anderlecht coach Simon Davies, who was recently appointed as head of methodology at the club.

Defoe scored 143 goals in 363 appearances in two spells at Spurs and retired last season after a short spell back at another of his former clubs, Sunderland.

This will be his first official coaching role, having worked briefly on Rangers’ coaching staff after Steven Gerrard left for Aston Villa.

Toure is one of the division’s best-ever central midfielders after his eight years at Man City, where he scored 79 goals in 316 games, helping them to three Premier League titles.

The Ivorian has had some previous coaching experience, having worked as an assistant manager with Ukrainian side Olimpik Donetsk and Russian club Akhmat Grozny.

Tottenham have helped both former players undertake their coaching badges and will now offer them the chance to kick-start their career in the dugout in north London.

Bournemouth boss Scott Parker began his coaching career in a similar role, as did Ryan Mason, who now assists first-team boss Antonio Conte.

Meanwhile, Ledley King also held a role in Jose Mourinho’s coaching team with Spurs keen to provide ex-players with a chance at a new career after their playing days are over.
