According to talkSPORT, Everton is interested in signing Wout Weghorst, who is currently on loan at Manchester United. However, the Red Devils do not plan to buy the Burnley striker permanently after his loan spell at Old Trafford. Weghorst joined Manchester United in January, leaving his season-long loan spell at Turkish club Besiktas to seal the temporary Old Trafford switch. Unfortunately, the 30-year-old Dutchman struggled to get in amongst the goals at Man United, scoring just twice in 31 appearances – neither of them in the Premier League. Despite this, he helped Man United win the Carabao Cup against Newcastle.
Everton had a poor season, narrowly avoiding relegation for a second successive campaign. They managed just 34 goals in 38 league matches in 2022/23. Although they have England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin at their disposal, he missed large chunks of the season due to injury. Everton is looking to strengthen their front line, and Weghorst could be a potential target.
As things stand, Weghorst is set to make a return to newly-promoted Premier League side Burnley. The Clarets romped to the Championship title in the 2022/23 season, finishing ten points clear of second-placed Sheffield United on 101 points. Weghorst joined Burnley in January 2022 from German side Wolfsburg in a reported £12million transfer fee. However, like at Man United, he struggled to make an impact at Turf Moor as he scored just twice in 20 appearances for the Clarets, who were relegated from the top flight in the 2021/22 season. It remains to be seen if Weghorst is part of Clarets manager Vincent Kompany’s plans.
