Premier League asks PGMOL to review controversial VAR decisions involving Chelsea vs West Ham and Newcastle vs Crystal Palace

VAR took centre stage at the weekend for all the wrong reasons and the Premier League has stepped in to try and address it.

It has asked the referees’ body PGMOL to review controversial VAR decisions seen at Chelsea vs West Ham and Newcastle vs Crystal Palace.

West Ham were denied a late equaliser at Stamford Bridge when Maxwel Cornet’s strike was chalked off, with Jarrod Bowen deemed to have fouled Edouard Mendy.

David Moyes was fuming after the incident and said VAR official Jarred Gillett was unfit for duty, while also confronting referee Andy Madley.

Newcastle also had a goal ruled out in their 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace when Joe Willock was adjudged to have fouled Eagles goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Both decisions were heavily criticised and the Premier League has now called for the matters to be investigated.

Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders believes that referees’ lack of knowledge of the game is being exposed by the recent VAR blunders.

He told Weekend Sports Breakfast: “The VAR is there to help the referee, and this is harsh what I’m about to say, but some of the referees don’t understand football.

“The VAR check is exposing them, because what are you looking at? You don’t even know what you are looking at.”

He continued: “I’m confident if I had seven screens, two or three minutes, to look at seven different angles of an incident because I’ve played football then I would be able to work out what has happened in that incident.

“I’m confident I’d get one wrong in 50. They get them wrong every week, it’s just ridiculous.”
