Premier League Chief Richard Masters has emphasized the importance of resolving Manchester City’s ongoing legal case for the sake of the league. An independent disciplinary commission is set to rule on the 115 financial charges against City, with a verdict expected early next year. Masters stated, “It’s been going on for a number of years and it is time now for the case to resolve itself.”
The charges against City relate to alleged breaches of the league’s financial rules, some of which date back to 2009. The club has denied all charges. Masters acknowledged the significance of the case, stating, “It does matter. It creates uncertainty and frustration.” However, he emphasized that enforcing the rules was necessary, as all clubs had agreed to abide by them. “They have looked each other in the eye and shaken each other’s hand and said, ‘We will abide by these rules’. So the Premier League has to enforce them,” Masters explained. He further added that any difficulties or frustrations caused by the enforcement were part of protecting the Premier League’s competition and its core values.
If found guilty, City could face penalties such as points deductions, fines, or even expulsion from the Premier League. It’s worth noting that other clubs, including Leicester and Everton, also have outstanding cases, while Chelsea is currently being investigated for possible rule breaches under former owner Roman Abramovich. Everton and Nottingham Forest were both docked points last season for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Masters emphasized the need to let the disciplinary panel handle the case and reach a resolution. The Premier League is keen to address the issue promptly to minimize the uncertainty and disruption it has caused. Resolving the legal case against Manchester City is crucial not only for the club but also for the integrity and stability of the Premier League as a whole.
