Ange Postecoglou has been appointed as the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, becoming the first Australian to take charge of a Premier League team. Postecoglou left Celtic to take up the role, and will have a number of tasks to tackle in his new job. Firstly, he will need to ensure that star striker Harry Kane stays at the club, despite interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid. Kane is settled in London and has expressed a desire to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record. Postecoglou will also need to find a new goalkeeper, as Hugo Lloris has publicly stated his desire to leave. Brentford’s David Raya and Brighton’s Robert Sanchez are among the potential replacements.
Postecoglou will also need to excite the fans and rebuild the culture at Tottenham, after supporters became bored with the football served up by previous manager Antonio Conte. The club is looking for a coach who can bring back an exciting, expansive style while building a winning culture. Postecoglou’s work on the training ground is seen as similar to that of former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, and he has been given a four-year deal to try and turn things around.
Finally, Postecoglou will need to put his own stamp on the squad by moving on some of the expensive cast-offs assembled by previous managers. Lloris, Ivan Perisic, Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Giovani Lo Celso are among those who could be sold, while midfielder Yves Bissouma and Djed Spence are likely to be given a fresh start. Postecoglou will also need to prove his ability to unearth gems on a budget, as Tottenham are not expected to be among the biggest spenders in the Premier League this summer.
