Ange Postecoglou Downplays Transfer Allegations Surrounding Jermain Defoe’s Move from Tottenham to Portsmouth

Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has addressed concerns over transfer allegations involving Jermain Defoe’s move from Tottenham to Portsmouth in 2008. Postecoglou stated that the issue is not within his purview and that his focus is on the upcoming match against Aston Villa.

Investigation Reveals Unlicensed Agent Involvement

Last week, an investigation by The Times uncovered that Tottenham had engaged with an unlicensed agent during Defoe’s transfer to Fratton Park 15 years ago. This breach of rules has previously resulted in point deductions, fines, and even relegation for more serious offenses. Although the Football Association did not take action against Tottenham at the time, they have now confirmed that they will review the case.

Postecoglou’s Response

Postecoglou, who was coaching in the Greek third division when the transfer occurred, expressed his lack of concern regarding the allegations. When asked about the issue, he replied, “And? In 2008? I think I was maybe coaching Brisbane Roar mate, so fair to say I wasn’t around then! And really, if you think that’s coming across my desk… people are keeping a fair bit away from me at the moment because of what’s really important, and that is we’ve got a big game on Sunday.”

Pressed further on the matter, Postecoglou reiterated that it is not within his scope of responsibility, stating, “For me to give you an answer would mean me sitting down with whoever is doing the investigation, whoever has all the information here… I don’t have that time in my day to be assessing those kinds of issues.”

Tottenham’s Challenges Ahead of Aston Villa Match

Tottenham is currently facing several injury and suspension issues ahead of their match against Aston Villa. Players such as Cristian Romero, Yves Bissouma, Micky van de Ven, and James Maddison will be unavailable for the game.
