Manchester United have reignited their interest in Norwich City right-back Max Aarons, according to reports.

United have a long-term interest in the 22-year-old and were linked to him earlier this summer as they considered using Ethan Laird as part of a swap deal.

Aarons, who has 18 caps for England U21s, has played 168 games for Norwich across the Premier League and Championship, helping them win the second-tier title twice.

He was crowned EFL Young Player of the Year for 2018-19 and has twice been named in the EFL Team of the Season and PFA Championship Team of the Year.

‘Norwich’s Max Aarons could become a possible solution as Manchester United look into options at right-back,’ Sky Sports reported on Wednesday.

‘He has been a historical target for them – and has been assessed by two other top six clubs previously – but it remains to be seen how their interest develops.’

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand, who recently claimed there is only one United player who could break into the Liverpool and Manchester City teams, is a big fan of Aarons and urged the club to sign him earlier this summer.

‘Someone like Max Aarons, you could put him like a Chris Smalling-type signing where they come in and they have an impact,’ he said.

‘They may not be straight starters immediately but they go and they stay there for 10 years and have a really good career and they impact the club at different levels.’

It has been a summer of change at Old Trafford as the club embark on a new era under Erik ten Hag, who lost his first game in charge on Sunday to Brighton.

United have signed Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez while several high-profile players have left the club.

Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic, Edinson Cavani and Andreas Pereira have all departed while Alex Telles and Dean Henderson have been sent out on loan to Sevilla and Nottingham Forest respectively.
