The Portland Timbers have completed a trade with Inter Miami to acquire Canadian international center back Kamal Miller, according to sources familiar with the deal. In exchange, Miami will receive $625,000 in general allocation money (GAM), an international roster spot, and an additional $150,000 GAM in performance-based incentives.
Miller, 26, joined Miami in a trade from CF Montréal and played a crucial role in their Leagues Cup victory, starting all seven games in the tournament. He made a total of 35 appearances in various competitions throughout the year. With previous experience at Montréal and Orlando City, Miller has amassed 110 regular-season appearances in MLS.
Notably, Miller played a significant role in Canada’s qualification for the 2022 World Cup and featured in all three group-stage matches in Qatar. He has earned 41 caps for the national team.
This trade reunites Miller with his former coach at Miami, Phil Neville, who is now the head coach of the Portland Timbers. Miller’s arrival provides the team with a new defensive anchor and offers Neville the flexibility to implement a three-center back system if desired. The Timbers already have Dario Zuparic, Miguel Araujo, and Zac McGraw in their defensive lineup.
For Inter Miami, this deal not only creates salary cap space but also generates much-needed allocation money as they make further moves for the upcoming season. The team has already signed Luis Suarez and prioritizes the acquisition of free agent Julian Gressel, among other changes. Tomás Avilés and Sergii Kryvtsov are expected to form Miami’s starting central defense pair in Miller’s absence.
Overall, this trade strengthens the Portland Timbers’ defensive capabilities while providing Inter Miami with valuable assets for their roster reconstruction.
