Police make five arrests as investigation launched into fireworks landing on Turf Moor pitch during Burnley’s win over Blackburn

Lancashire Police have launched an investigation after Burnley’s 3-0 win at home to Blackburn was briefly stopped after fireworks landed on the pitch.

The incident happened during the final moments of the match with a bang heard while play was going on.

Seconds later the fireworks, which appeared to be let off outside the ground, then landed on the pitch and thankfully didn’t hit any of the players or referee David Coote, who swiftly halted play.

The police later confirmed there had been five arrests, while a ‘small number’ of fans were ejected from the stadium.

A police statement read: “We are also aware of isolated pockets of disorder and missile throwing during the game which will form part of the post match investigation.

“This will be thoroughly investigated by our officers and officials from both football clubs. Footage will be reviewed and the appropriate action will be taken against anybody involved.”

Assistant chief constable Russ Procter added: “Sadly, a minority of people’s behaviour has overstepped the mark and we have pro-actively intervened where necessary to make arrests.

“Although disappointing, I don’t want these isolated pockets of poor behaviour to detract from what has been a good, well-attended East Lancashire derby fixture.”

The remainder of the match was played out as Burnley secured a 3-0 win over their rivals.

An Ashley Barnes brace in the second half, plus Anass Zaroury’s 74th-minute goal saw Vincent Kompany’s men go top of the Championship. Rovers are third in the table and five points off Burnley.

The Clarets faithful enjoyed getting one over on their rivals and so did two-goal hero Barnes.

“Every goal is special but to score against the b******* there is amazing,” the striker said after the match.
