Christopher Nkunku Impresses on Premier League Debut for Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino believes that Christopher Nkunku has already demonstrated his importance to Chelsea after scoring on his Premier League debut. Nkunku’s goal was a bright spot in Chelsea’s recent loss to Wolves, where they were defeated 2-1 at Molineux.
Struggles in Front of Goal
Throughout the season, Chelsea has struggled with their finishing in front of goal, and this was evident in their match against Wolves. Mario Lemina gave Wolves the lead, and Matt Doherty seemed to secure the win with a goal in injury time. However, Nkunku’s header from Raheem Sterling’s cross in the 96th minute set up an exciting finish.
A Long-Awaited Debut
Nkunku, who was signed from RB Leipzig for £52 million, made his Premier League debut as a substitute just before the hour mark. This came shortly after his debut in the Carabao Cup win over Newcastle. The French forward had been sidelined with a knee injury since pre-season, and Chelsea has struggled in his absence.
Pochettino’s Hope for Nkunku
Pochettino expressed his satisfaction with Nkunku’s goal and emphasized his importance to the team. However, he also acknowledged the need to manage expectations and gradually ease Nkunku back into full fitness. Pochettino believes that Nkunku has the potential to be a key player for Chelsea and contribute goals.
Nkunku himself shared mixed feelings about the Wolves loss on Instagram, expressing his frustration with the result but also his happiness at scoring his first goal for Chelsea. He wished fans a Merry Christmas and looked forward to the next match at Stamford Bridge.
With his goal, Nkunku became the 27th Chelsea player to score on his Premier League debut and the first substitute to do so since Alvaro Morata in 2017. Chelsea fans will be eager to see if Nkunku can add to his tally when they face Crystal Palace on December 27th.
