Nottingham Forest Defender Willy Boly Calls for Clarity on VAR Rules
Nottingham Forest defender Willy Boly has expressed his frustration with the lack of clarity surrounding VAR rules, following his controversial red card against Bournemouth on Saturday.
A Controversial Decision
Boly received a second yellow card in the first half after a challenge on Adam Smith, despite cleanly winning the ball. Referee Rob Jones quickly cautioned Boly, who had already been rightfully booked for an earlier foul on Dominic Solanke.
Unfortunately, VAR was unable to intervene in this case since it involved a second yellow card rather than a straight red. As a result, Boly will be suspended for his team’s upcoming Boxing Day match against Newcastle.
Calling for Change
Boly expressed his frustration with the current rules and called for a revision. “The rules are so difficult, and it’s also difficult for the referee,” Boly stated. “VAR is here to help us because the stakes are high for everyone. However, VAR didn’t assist me today, and I hope they reconsider these types of decisions in the future.”
The defender defended his actions, stating, “To be clear, I went in low, my studs were not raised, and I cleanly played the ball without endangering my opponent. He came down and made contact with my foot. The referee made the wrong decision, which can happen. Sometimes you get bad decisions.”
Boly also suggested that referees could benefit from assistance off the pitch when making crucial decisions. “Where I think he struggles is when he says, ‘what I saw was this’. It would be better if someone else could help him by studying the video. I don’t understand why they can’t say to him, ‘we think you made the wrong decision, it is not a yellow card, go and take a look again’.”
Highlighting the Flaw
Boly emphasized that the current system allows for clear and obvious errors to go uncorrected. “Everyone can make a mistake, but the problem is that even if they know he has made a mistake, there is nothing they can do. This is the worst thing,” he concluded.
With Boly’s call for greater clarity on VAR rules, it remains to be seen if any changes will be implemented to address these concerns in the future.
