Phil Jones, the former England star, is celebrating after helping Manchester United secure a spot in the FA Cup Final against rivals Manchester City. However, there is still mounting pressure on manager Erik ten Hag as they prepare for a Premier League clash with Sheffield United. Amidst the pressure, there is reason to celebrate at the club as Man Utd’s U18s have achieved a league and cup double. Led by coach Adam Lawrence, the young guns secured the Premier League North title last week and went unbeaten in the league until March. The season got even better as they defeated City to lift the Premier League Cup.
The success of the U18s has been attributed to the work of Head of the Academy Nick Cox, Lawrence, and U21 boss Travis Binnion. However, Phil Jones, who retired last summer after his contract expired, has also played a significant role. Jones, part of United’s last Premier League title-winning side, has been back on the training pitch as part of the U18s’ coaching staff this season while studying for his coaching badges. Lawrence praised Jones for his contribution to the team, saying that he has added value not just in terms of his knowledge and experience on the field but also in off-field areas such as team selection, preparation for games, and nutrition.
Jones had a 12-year career at Old Trafford, plagued by injuries in his final years. He made 229 appearances for Man Utd and won several titles, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League. Despite his achievements, Jones turned down a testimonial because he believed only his parents would attend.
