Peter Schmeichel slams Manchester United signing Sofyan Amrabat after Crystal Palace defeat

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel singled out new signing Sofyan Amrabat for criticism following a disastrous first-half against Crystal Palace.

The deadline day signing, arriving on loan from Fiorentina, made his first start for the club midweek against Palace in their Carabao Cup third round tie, impressing on his full debut in English football.

With Sergio Reguilon, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia all sidelined, the Morocco international started at left-back against Roy Hodgson’s side but gave away the free kick that led to Palace’s opener after 25 minutes.

With Jordan Ayew seemingly going nowhere out on the right wing, Amrabat bundled the forward over with Joachim Andersen lashing home a stunning volley to give the hosts the lead.

Amrabat Struggles in First Half

It was a difficult first-half for the midfielder, giving away a number of needless free kicks as United toiled in front of their own fans.

Analysing the action at half-time, former goalkeeper Schmeichel highlighted his poor first-half showing.

‘We talked about Amrabat before the game, it is first full Premier League game and he has just not had a great game so far,’ Schmeichel told Premier League Productions.

‘He gives a silly foul away which leads to this free kick. I expected a Danish player [United striker Rasmus Hojlund] to score at the other end today but for Joachim Anderson to hit the ball like that, what a fantastic goal.’

Onana Spared Blame

The role of Andre Onana, who made a calamitous error in the Champions League against Bayern Munich, was called into question by some United fans on social media for Andersen’s strike.

But Schmeichel spared the Cameroon international of any blame.

‘We can talk about whether the goalkeeper should have done better, should the defence have done better. Just enjoy this. It is a fantastic finish.’

United Ease to Victory

United eased to a 3-0 win over Palace with Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial all getting on the score sheet.

Conclusion

Sofyan Amrabat endured a difficult first-half against Palace and was singled out for criticism by Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel. However, United were able to ease to a 3-0 victory over Palace with Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial all getting on the score sheet.
