Pep Guardiola says he wants to keep Bernardo Silva at Manchester City next season, despite interest from Barcelona.

The Portuguese playmaker is a target for Barcelona manager Xavi, who has identified the midfielder as a replacement for Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong.

Silva is said to be open to moving to the Camp Nou but Guardiola wants to keep the midfielder, particularly with Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling likely to leave the club.

But, though Guardiola insists he wants Silva to stay, he admitted today that he won’t force any ‘unhappy’ players to stay at the Etihad.

‘As of today, in my opinion, I think Bernardo Silva will continue with Manchester City next season. Our goal, as a club, is for him to stay with us,’ said Guardiola.

‘This is our intention, although I don’t like to keep players at City that are unhappy.’

Barcelona are set to play City in a friendly match in August and Guardiola says Silva will be part of his squad for the game.

The Catalans are in financial disarray and must sell before they can buy this summer.

Nevertheless, Xavi remains keen on Silva and Bayern Munich ace Robert Lewandowski.
