Pep Guardiola explains how Julian Alvarez reminds him of Arsenal new boy Gabriel Jesus as Man City signing shines with Erling Haaland debut delayed

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has compared new signing Julian Alvarez to Gabriel Jesus after an impressive debut.

Alvarez, the 22-year-old striker, made his first appearance for City in a 2-1 victory over Club America in pre-season.

Signed from River Plate for £14million, the Argentine was immediately loaned back to his boyhood club in January before linking up with his new team.

Although he did not score on Wednesday, Alvarez left the perfect impression on Guardiola for his tireless work in and out of possession.

The City manager even compared him to Brazil striker Jesus, who was recently sold to Arsenal for £45m.

“Julian [Alvarez] was incredible, defensively he is quite similar like Gabriel [Jesus],” Guardiola said.

“Gabriel is probably the best, but he [Alvarez] is close to him in aggression and how intuitive he is, he makes the runs and with the ball he’s absolutely brilliant.

“He can keep the ball and you can link with him without a problem.

“We have the feeling we signed a top-class young player for the next years to come, and we are delighted.

“The job that [manager] Marcelo Gallardo did at River Plate, we have the benefit, and hopefully he can grow up in an important league like Premier League.”

Meanwhile, City’s marquee signing Erling Haaland was forced to wait for his first appearance for the Premier League champions as the club focus on his fitness.

“Next game maybe he will be ready,” Guardiola said after the match.

“We don’t want to take any risks, maybe against Bayern he will get a few minutes. We will see the evolution.”

Kevin De Bruyne scored both goals in the victory, while £51m man Haaland watched on as an unused substitute.
