Pep Guardiola Accused of Retaining Discontent Players by Former Manchester City Star
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has been accused by former player Aymeric Laporte of retaining discontent players at the club. Laporte dismissed Guardiola’s claim that he does not want to keep unhappy players, stating that it was not the case for several players. Guardiola has allowed several key first-team players to leave City during his time as manager, including Joao Cancelo, Raheem Sterling, and Cole Palmer, who made a successful move to Chelsea last summer.
Guardiola has been quoted saying, “If any of these players are not satisfied, it is so simple. With their agents, go to the club and say, ‘I am not happy, I want to leave,’ and we are going to find a solution. We want committed and happy people to be here.” However, Laporte’s departure from City last August contradicts Guardiola’s statement. Laporte joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr after being given the green light to leave the club.
In an interview with Radio Marca, Laporte was asked about Guardiola’s frequent claim that the door is always open for unhappy players to move on from City. Laporte responded by stating that while Guardiola usually says that, it was not the case for several players. He did not delve into specifics but confirmed that he made the decision to leave and was able to do so.
Laporte also expressed his frustration with Guardiola’s decision to play him as a left-back for City. He said, “I had been playing there for a long time, I had achieved almost everything and I had been playing for two years in a place that was not the position that I did not want to play.” He added that it was frustrating to not play in his ideal position and not showcase his best abilities. Laporte mentioned that City signed many other center-backs during his time at the club, which contributed to his decision to leave.
The 29-year-old defender wanted to play more and be a regular starter. He stated, “I wasn’t quite a starter either, I wanted to play all the games, I am very young or young. I simply wanted to play more.” Laporte had options in Europe but decided to move on to something else and seek a change of scenery. He wanted to disconnect from City and come back stronger in the future.
It is clear from Laporte’s comments that Guardiola’s claim of the door always being open for unhappy players may not hold true for everyone. Laporte’s frustration with his playing position and desire for more game time led him to make the decision to leave City. While Guardiola has allowed players to leave in the past, it seems that some players have not found it as simple as the manager suggests. Guardiola will need to ensure that he effectively manages player discontent in order to maintain a harmonious squad at Manchester City.
