Penn State Set to Hire Former Indiana Head Coach Tom Allen as Defensive Coordinator
Penn State is set to bring on board former Indiana head coach Tom Allen as its new defensive coordinator, according to a source within the program. The news was first reported by ESPN.
Completing James Franklin’s Coordinator Turnover
With this addition, Tom Allen will complete James Franklin’s coordinator turnover, following the recent hiring of Andy Kotelnicki from Kansas to replace the fired Mike Yurcich. Allen will be taking charge of a defense that excelled under Manny Diaz, who left to become the head coach at Duke, leading the nation in yards per play allowed.

Tom Allen, 53, had a seven-year tenure as Indiana’s head coach, accumulating a record of 33-49. His most successful season came in 2019 with an 8-5 record, and he also achieved a 6-2 record in the shortened 2020 season. Prior to his time at Indiana, Allen served as the defensive coordinator at South Florida in 2015 and spent three seasons on the Ole Miss staff.
