Paul Scholes has questioned whether Anthony Martial has a long-term future at Manchester United following their Europa League exit. The Red Devils were defeated 3-0 by Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium and now have to focus on their FA Cup semi-final against Brighton at Wembley on Sunday.
Scholes believes Martial “doesn’t have the heart” to play for United and that the club need to address multiple positions in the upcoming transfer window. He told BT Sport: “I think a centre-forward position, that’s quite clear. I think Anthony Martial is a talented lad but I think when the going gets tough, when he’s really got to dig in, he doesn’t quite have the heart for it. He didn’t tonight, again.”
The former United midfielder also suggested that the club need to address their right-back position and questioned goalkeeper David de Gea’s ability to play out from the back. He said: “I think Ten Hag eventually will want to play out from the back. David de Gea has been a fantastic goalkeeper but he’s not a fantastic footballer. You see the pass he played into Harry Maguire, look, it’s not a bad pass I know, Harry Maguire wanted it, but you have to read the situation, read what’s going on in the stadium, it’s not the place.”
