Paul Merson believes Tottenham won’t stay top of the Premier League but could have an ‘unbelievable season’
Tottenham Hotspur have made a remarkable start to the 2034/24 Premier League season, sitting atop of the table after eight games and yet to lose a game in the league. While many are singing the praises of manager Ange Postecoglou, Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Spurs won’t stay top of the table but could still have an ‘unbelievable season’.
Merson was full of praise for Spurs following their hard-fought win over Luton, saying that even a top four finish would be a great success for the side. He added that Man City are still the team to beat, though their loss at Arsenal last Sunday has made the title race very interesting.

“A couple of weeks ago you were thinking, “if Man City win at Arsenal, they are going to go seven points clear of them and that is the end of it for Arsenal”,” Merson said. “Now all of a sudden they have beaten them and that will give them so much confidence – if they had beaten them just once last year, they would have gone on to win the league. So that is how big it is.”
“People are getting carried away, though, as Man City are slow starters. Do not get me wrong, it is game on, as they have just lost again, but they are the only team in the league who can win 13-14 games on the trot when it gets past Christmas.”
“You look at their squad and it is much bigger than everyone else’s – any side that finishes above Man City this season will be league champions. There is no way two or three teams will finish above them.”
Can Tottenham finish in the top four?
Tottenham have made a great start to the season, but with Man City and Liverpool also in the mix, it will be tough for Spurs to finish in the top four. However, if they can keep up their current form and maintain their unbeaten run in the league, then they could well be in contention for a Champions League spot.
The key for Spurs will be to remain consistent and not let their form slip. If they can do that, then they could well be in with a chance of finishing in the top four and having an ‘unbelievable season’.
