Chelsea FC: Evaluating Todd Boehly’s Transfers Since Takeover
Paul Merson believes that Chelsea have only made one standout signing since Todd Boehly took over the club in 2022.
The Struggle for Success
Since Boehly’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea has invested over £1 billion in 29 new players. However, the team has struggled to find consistent success under the management of Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, and now Mauricio Pochettino.
Currently sitting in 12th place in the Premier League, a significant 14 points behind the top four, Pochettino is eager to make more signings in the upcoming January transfer window.
Pochettino’s Influence on Recruitment
Merson argues that Pochettino should have more control over the club’s recruitment process, considering the lack of success with previous signings during the Boehly era.
“If Chelsea go and buy players in January, then Pochettino has to have a say in it,” Merson wrote for Sky Sports. “I went through the summer signings, and there are not many you can say have been amazing.”
Standout Signings
According to Merson, Cole Palmer has been the standout signing for Chelsea. However, he believes that most of the other signings have failed to impress. Players like Mykhailo Mudryk, Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandes, Axel Disasi, Noni Madueke, and Carney Chukwuemeka have yet to make a significant impact.
Cole Palmer’s Performance
Attacking midfielder Cole Palmer made a surprising move from Manchester City to Chelsea on deadline day for a fee of £42.5 million. He has performed well so far, scoring five goals and providing four assists in 15 games. However, it should be noted that the majority of his goals have come from penalty kicks.
Despite Palmer’s success, Merson questions the overall thinking behind Chelsea’s signings and suggests that Pochettino should have more influence in future transfer decisions.
