Paul Ince Favourite to Become Sheffield Wednesday’s New Manager

Former Reading boss Paul Ince is the new odds-on favourite to become the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday following Darren Moore’s surprise exit from the club. The Owls are preparing for their first season back in the Championship after two seasons in League One, and are on the hunt for a new manager following Moore’s departure by mutual consent.

Ince, who is 1/2 with talkSPORT BET’s manager odds, was appointed as manager of Reading towards the end of the 2021-22 season initially in a caretaker role, but took the job on full time last summer after surviving relegation despite being hit with a 6 point deduction. However, keeping them in the Championship for another season, with another 6 point deduction, proved one step too far as Ince’s Royals side fell into the third tier of English football for the first time since 2002.

The former England international also has experience of managing in the Premier League, having taken charge of Blackburn for the first half of the 2008-09 season. Second on the list is former Southampton manager Nathan Jones, whose odds have fallen from 8/1 to 11/4 overnight. The Welshman struggled at the Saints last season, only lasting 14 matches before being given his marching orders in February this year, but the 50-year-old has enjoyed great success in the Championship before.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard’s odds for taking over at Hillsborough have dropped to 5/1 overnight. Gerrard has been without a managerial job since he was sacked as manager of Aston Villa in October last year, and rumours suggest he could be tempted by the Hillsborough job. The 43-year-old enjoyed success in his first managerial role at Rangers, delivering the club their first league title in 10 years when he lifted the trophy in 2021.

Former Benfica manager and Primeira Liga winner Bruno Lage is also in the conversation, with the Portuguese’s odds dipping slightly from 6/1 to 5/1. The 47-year-old has been without a job since receiving his marching orders from Wolves back in October last year. Lage’s compatriot Vitor Campelos is also on the shortlist at 8/1 to take over at Hillsborough, though he was as short as 5/2 yesterday.

Former Owls manager Carlos Carvalhal has drifted from 2/1 to 12/1, the man who took the club to within a penalty shootout of the Premier League back in 2017. The Portuguese took the club to two Championship play-off finals in three years, and even had a stint in the Premier League as manager of Swansea for the second half of the 2017-18 season. The 57-year-old most recently managed in La Liga as the boss of Celta Vigo, taking over in November last year with the club locked in a relegation battle, before securing a 13th place finish with a win over champions Barcelona on the final day of the season.

Current Darmstadt manager Torsten Lieberknecht is also in the running at 12/1. Lieberknecht has just earned promotion to the Bundesliga with the German side in his second season in charge of the club.

Conclusion

Sheffield Wednesday are on the hunt for a new manager following Darren Moore’s surprise exit from the club. Paul Ince is the new odds-on favourite to become the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday, followed by Nathan Jones, Steven Gerrard, Bruno Lage, Vitor Campelos, Carlos Carvalhal, and Torsten Lieberknecht.
