England 0-2 Australia: Lionesses Show Weaknesses – Is This a Warning Sign?

0

Despite the disappointment of Tuesday’s defeat, England’s World Cup preparations remain on track. The Lionesses have now faced seven of the world’s top 10 sides in the past 14 months and have come out with four trophies. While the loss to Australia may have been an untimely one, it is unlikely to derail England’s World Cup ambitions. The Lionesses will now look to use the defeat as a learning experience, as they look to find the next level in their game and break down teams who employ a defensive approach. With a wealth of talent still available to them, England will be confident of making a strong impression at this summer’s tournament.

England’s World Cup preparations took a hit on Tuesday as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Australia, ending their 30-game unbeaten run. Despite the disappointment of the result, it is unlikely to derail their ambitions for the tournament this summer. The Lionesses have won four trophies in the past 14 months, having faced seven of the world’s top 10 sides in that time, and will now use the defeat as a learning experience.

The blueprint for success was clear for Australia – frustrate England out of possession then hit them on the counter-attack, feeding superstar striker Sam Kerr at the earliest opportunity – and it worked perfectly. Despite having 71% of possession, England were limited to four shots on target as their usually fluid attacking play lacked rhythm and impetus. Former England midfielder Karen Carney said: “Teams have a blueprint as to how to play against us now, how to stop us. But I think the only way we’re going to be beaten is by beating ourselves.”

England were missing key defenders Millie Bright and Alex Greenwood, while winger Lauren Hemp had to come off after half an hour due to injury. With Ballon d’Or runner-up Beth Mead and Chelsea midfielder Fran Kirby also out with long-term injuries, England’s options were sparse off the bench. Former England defender Gilly Flaherty said: “Teams are going to show England respect now. They are going to sit in blocks and are going to make it hard. England now need to find that next level, to know how to break down teams when they use this approach.”

Lionesses head coach Sarina Wiegman said her side were “lacking energy” and admitted they still need to improve when forced to break teams down. Chelsea manager Emma Hayes added: “This is uncharacteristic of England. Rarely do we see them looking so sluggish as a team. We’re used to them creating so many chances.”

Former striker Eni Aluko said the result “does not derail” England but will “strengthen them” in their preparation for this summer’s tournament. She said: “They will know you can’t go into a World Cup cruising. It should strengthen them. It should make them feel a bit human and humble them a bit.”

England will now look to use the defeat as a learning experience, as they look to find the next level in their game and break down teams who employ a defensive approach. With a wealth of talent still available to them, England will be confident of making a strong impression at this summer’s tournament. Despite the loss to Australia, England’s World Cup preparations remain on track and they will be determined to make amends for this untimely defeat.

Manchester United issue injury update on Marcus Rashford ahead of Europa League clash

Manchester United have announced that Marcus Rashford will ‘unavailable for a few games’ through injury but will return before the end of the season.

The prolific forward limped off during United’s 2-0 win over Everton last Saturday, shortly after setting up Anthony Martial for the second goal of the game.

It was later confirmed that the 25-year-old had suffered a muscle injury but how long he would be on the sidelines for was unclear, though it seemed unlikely he would be back in time for Thursday night’s Europa League clash against Sevilla.

The Red Devils have now confirmed this to be the case in a statement on Wednesday morning, saying: ‘Marcus Rashford will be unavailable for Thursday’s UEFA Europa League quarter-final game against Sevilla because of a muscle injury.

‘The forward was withdrawn in the 80th minute of Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Everton at Old Trafford and immediately headed to the dressing room for treatment.

‘Subsequent assessment of the injury suggested that Marcus will be unavailable for a few games, but is expected to be back for the season run-in.’

Following Thursday’s match at Old Trafford, United take on Nottingham Forest on Sunday but the following 10 days sees a crucial run of games for Erik ten Hag’s men.

Firstly, they travel to Sevilla for the second-leg of the quarter-final tie, before heading to Wembley for an FA semi-final against Brighton, and finally facing Tottenham in a pivotal match in the top four race.

While the news could certainly have been a lot worse, it is a big blow for United who have relied heavily on Rashford’s goals this season.

The England international has found the back of the net 28 times in 47 appearances so far this season, with United’s next top goalscorer being Bruno Fernandes on 10.

But this does not concern Ten Hag, who recently said: ‘We have many more players across the squad who can score.

‘I think we have players like Bruno, like Jadon Sancho, like Anthony Martial, like Scott McTominay, like Antony. We have enough players with the capabilities to score goals, definitely.’

Man Utd confirms Rashford injury but offers fans hope with update.

Manchester United have confirmed that Marcus Rashford will miss several games due to a muscle injury sustained during the team’s 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday. While the club did not provide an exact timeline for his return, they did state that he will miss multiple games, including the Europa League match against Sevilla on Thursday. The 25-year-old forward is expected to return for the season run-in.

Rashford has been United’s standout player this season, scoring 28 goals across all competitions. The Red Devils are currently fourth in the Premier League table and are in a race for Champions League qualification. Following the second leg against Sevilla on April 20, United will face Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals on April 23 and top-four rivals Tottenham on April 27. Rashford faces a race to be fit for this crucial week.

Manager Erik ten Hag responded to the news by stating that the team has many other players who can score, including Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay, and Antony. While Rashford’s absence will undoubtedly be felt, United has a strong squad and will be looking to secure their place in the top four without him.

Rashford’s injury is a blow to both United and England, who will be hoping to have him fit for this summer’s European Championships. However, it is important that he takes the time to fully recover and does not rush back too soon. With the season reaching its climax, United will need all of their key players fit and firing if they are to achieve their goals.

In Rashford’s absence, United will be looking to other players to step up and provide the goals needed to secure their place in the top four. Fernandes has been in excellent form since joining the club in January 2020 and will be crucial to their success. Martial and Mason Greenwood have also been among the goals this season and will be looking to continue their good form.

While Rashford’s injury is a setback, United has shown that they have the quality and depth to cope with such setbacks. With several important games coming up, they will need to be at their best if they are to achieve their goals. The return of Rashford for the season run-in will be a huge boost, but in the meantime, United will need to find a way to win without him.

4 times Liverpool ‘pulled out’ but still signed the player: From Alisson to Van Dijk

With Liverpool reported to have withdrawn interest in Jude Bellingham, there are similarities with four other eventual transfers at Anfield.

After months and months of pursuing the Dortmund youngster, Tuesday night brought the news that Liverpool had pulled out of the race to sign Bellingham.

The 19-year-old has been deemed too expensive, with SPORT1 journalist Patrick Berger claiming Dortmund are seeking €150 million, and now alternative targets will be focused on.

That is, if reports from journalists on Merseyside are to be believed, of course.

With the sudden release of the news of Liverpool’s U-turn over Bellingham, it is widely believed that the club have leaked the information, leading many fans to question why.

Could it all be part of their negotiation tactics? Four previous stories suggest it is at least possible.

Naby Keita – 2017

A transfer saga that excited fans but proved to be a cautionary tale – and one which could even be used as an example if the Bellingham deal has, indeed, collapsed.

Interest in Keita first emerged in March 2017, with the club pivoting to the Guinean upon the failure to sign either Mahmoud Dahoud or Piotr Zielinski the previous summer.

Soon after, RB Leipzig insisted their player was not for sale and chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff claimed it would be “negligent” to agree a transfer.

Liverpool saw three bids rejected before the Mail‘s Dominic King reported in July 2017 that the club had “abandoned their pursuit” of Keita.

Just over a month later, the club confirmed a club-record deal with Leipzig that would bring Keita to Anfield the following summer – sadly, he has failed to live up to the hype.

Virgil van Dijk – 2017

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Friday, January 5, 2018: Liverpool's new signing Virgil van Dijk, who joined from Southampton for £75m, a world record for a defender, during the FA Cup 3rd Round match between Liverpool FC and Everton FC, the 230th Merseyside Derby, at Anfield. Reports over Van Dijk’s switch to Merseyside first cropped up in December 2016, with then-Southampton manager Claude Puel forced to dismiss “speculation.”

Fast-forward four months and James Pearce reported in the Liverpool Echo that the club were prepared to break their transfer record to sign the Dutchman.

Van Dijk agreed to join Liverpool in June 2017, only for the transfer to collapse dramatically.

Two days later, the Reds had withdrawn their interest in a public statement that saw them apologise to Southampton for the way in which they handled negotiations.

But after the club avoided tapping-up charges, Van Dijk submitted a transfer request in August, with a £75 million deal confirmed by December.

Alisson – 2018

DUBLIN, REPUBLIC OF IRELAND - Saturday, August 4, 2018: Liverpool's new signing goalkeeper Alisson Becker signs autographs for supporters after the preseason friendly match between SSC Napoli and Liverpool FC at Landsdowne Road. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

“[Klopp will] seriously consider offering [Danny] Ward the chance to make the No. 1 jersey his own at the club,” the Mirror‘s David Maddock famously wrote in July 2018, adding that there were “absolutely no plans” to target Alisson.

Claims of Liverpool’s interest in Alisson initially broke in Italy, as early as January 2018, with this soon corroborated by the Times‘ Paul Joyce.

However, after reports of initial contact in February, Joyce claimed the club were “ready to end their interest” and Pearce wrote in March that the goalkeeper had been told “not to expect a bid” due to Roma’s £80 million price tag.

That is when Ward was positioned as future No. 1 – and we all know what happened next: a transformative, £65 million transfer confirmed in July 2018.

Ward was sold to Leicester days later.

Thiago – 2020

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, September 20, 2020: Liverpool’s new signing Thiago Alcantara makes his debut as a substitute during the FA Premier League match between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC at Stamford Bridge. The game was played behind closed doors due to the UK government’s social distancing laws during the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic. (Pic by Propaganda)

Finally, Liverpool’s surprise pursuit of Thiago, who was into the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020.

Reports of the club’s interest broke in Germany in June, with Spanish newspaper Sport then claiming the Reds were “very close” to a deal as Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed he would be sold.

The Liverpool Echo, however, described the rumours as “unfounded,” with Joyce writing in the Times that the Reds were “unlikely to target” the Spaniard.

Soon after, Bayern were reported to have dropped their price tag from €40 million to €30 million, with German publication BILD claiming Liverpool had offered €25 million.

The tactic seemingly paid off, with Liverpool announcing a deal for Thiago in July 2020 that saw them pay Bayern up to £25 million.

Erik ten Hag prefers Jude Bellingham over any player in the world, tells Man United board

Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has expressed his desire to sign Jude Bellingham, a young midfielder who has been making waves in the football world. Bellingham, who is only 19 years old, is set to be one of the biggest movers in the summer transfer market, with his current club, Dortmund, resigned to allowing him to leave.

Bellingham had previously turned down an offer from Manchester United in 2019, despite the club’s best efforts to woo him with a charm offensive that included legends such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Bryan Robson and Eric Cantona. However, his decision to join Dortmund has proven to be a smart one, as he has become a key figure with the Bundesliga giants and earned priceless experience in the Champions League.

It was Bellingham’s performances for England at the World Cup that really caught Ten Hag’s attention. The Dutchman was left astonished by the young midfielder’s displays in Qatar and reportedly told close friends that he would sign Bellingham over any other player in the world. Ten Hag would “endorse” a deal for Bellingham and United could therefore rival Manchester City and Real Madrid for his signature.

However, United’s priority is signing a world-class centre forward, which would leave little money remaining to sanction a £120m+ move for Bellingham. The club would need to raise funds and the likes of Anthony Martial, Donny van De Beek, Harry Maguire and Alex Telles are all available for transfer. Even then, it may not be enough to tempt Bellingham away from the likes of City and Madrid – who can offer a sure-fire guarantee of Champions League football season in, season out.

Despite the obstacles, Ten Hag remains keen on signing Bellingham and sees him as a key addition to the United squad. Bellingham’s youth and potential make him an attractive prospect for any club, and his performances for Dortmund and England have shown that he has the talent to succeed at the highest level.

United will face stiff competition for Bellingham’s signature, with City and Madrid also reportedly interested in the midfielder. However, United’s history and prestige could be a factor in Bellingham’s decision, as the club has a long tradition of nurturing young talent and giving them the opportunity to shine on the world stage.

In any case, the summer transfer market promises to be an exciting one, with Bellingham set to be one of the most sought-after players. United will need to act quickly if they want to secure his signature, but if they can pull it off, they will have a player who could become a key figure for the club for years to come.

Emma Watson: 17-Year-Old Scotland Soccer Player Scores Twice, Calls It “Crazy”

0

At the age of 17, Emma Watson never expected to score two goals in her second Scotland appearance. The Rangers midfielder was praised by head coach Pedro Martinez Losa for her outstanding performance in a 1-0 win over Australia and followed that up with a 4-0 drubbing of Costa Rica at Hampden. Watson admitted that the experience felt “a bit crazy” and that she was “very proud” of herself for taking on the challenge of international football.

When asked how far she can go in the game, Watson replied that she would take it one step at a time and focus on improving her skills at her club. Watson has looked up to Caroline Weir, the Real Madrid midfielder and Scotland captain, since she was young and has been inspired by her during this week. Weir was excited to see Watson play for the first time and was impressed by her attitude and physicality.

Martinez Losa has been convinced that Watson is a special player and is now firmly part of his set-up. However, he reminded everyone to keep their feet on the ground as Watson is still only 17 years old. Watson’s performance has been an inspiration to many and it will be exciting to see what she can achieve in the future.

Noel Gallagher backs Manchester City to win treble but reveals he can’t attend Champions League final

Noel Gallagher has backed Manchester City for treble glory this season but says he cannot attend the Champions League final even if Pep Guardiola’s side make it that far.

Man City have one foot in the semi-finals of the Champions League after thumping Bayern Munich 3-0 in the quarter-final first leg at the Etihad Stadium.

Goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland put the Premier League champions in complete control of the tie against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, now coached by former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

With Manchester City also challenging for the Premier League title and FA Cup trophy, Guardiola’s side could be on the verge of a special and historic campaign.

Man City are six points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal but the title is effectively in their own hands as they have a game in hand and face the Gunners later in the month.

Before that crucial league game, Manchester City face Championship side Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-finals. Manchester United take on Brighton in the other last-four clash.

Oasis legend Gallagher says Man City have looked ‘super focused’ in recent weeks and has backed his beloved Sky Blues to win their first European Cup this season and match Man United’s achievements in their famous 1998-99 campaign.

‘It looks like the players have flipped a switch now,’ he said on talkSPORT after Manchester City’s impressive victory over Bayern Munich.

‘And looking in from the outside, it looks like the players have now said about the Champions League, ‘We’re going to go win it this year, this is it”.

‘I’ve noticed, this huddle thing that we go into after we score and before we kick-off, I’ve never seen that before.

‘It looks like a flip has been switched and we’re in trophy mode now, and from watching the games against Southampton and Liverpool, it looks like they are super, super focused now, and it’s real now.’

Asked if he felt Man City could win the treble, Gallagher added: ‘You better believe it! We’ve got Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final, probably Brighton [who play Man United] in the final if we get there.

‘And then hopefully Chelsea will somehow jam it against Real Madrid and then we’ll annihilate them and play Benfica if they somehow manage to jam it into the final.

‘But in all seriousness though, these are the moments you live for as a football fan, we’ve got potentially 15/16 games left, all finals. This could be it.

‘It’s real, they can do it from here. Because no one has spoken about it for the last four months when usually it’s about the quadruple and all this kind of thing.

‘Now all of a sudden, it’s like, “Oh hang on a minute, we’re still in for this treble here” and actually watching that tonight, I wouldn’t bet against it.’

The Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul will host the 2023 Champions League final on June 10 but Gallagher will not be in attendance even if Manchester City are involved.

‘Unfortunately when I booked my world tour, I forgot to factor in the flipping World Cup,’ the High Flying Birds frontman said.

‘So when the Champions League final is on, I am going to be in America. I don’t care though! As long as we win it, I’m not bothered about being there. If we win it, I couldn’t care less about being there.’

Liverpool fans pick their ideal midfield transfers after Jude Bellingham ‘U-turn’

Liverpool’s summer activity was sent into overdrive on Tuesday night after the Reds reportedly “conceded defeat” in the race for Jude Bellingham, leaving many to draw up another target list.

With at least two months before the summer transfer window opens, news of the club stepping back from Bellingham to pursue alternative targets came earlier than many expected.

The prohibitive fees needed to conclude a deal – upwards of £115 million – should not have come as a surprise but that is the reasoning that has been given for Liverpool’s ‘U-turn’.

With an overhaul needed, the Reds could instead spread the money they would spend on one generational talent on at least two players – not that everyone will agree with that.

But when the Bellingham news dropped and other targets were listed, such as Mason Mount, Alexis Mac Allister, Nicolo Barella, Moises Caicedo and Ryan Gravenberch, it got fans thinking about the alternatives:

“Caicedo, Mac Allister, Nunes, Neves, Lavia, Rice, Mount, Scott, Gallagher, Le fee, Thuram, Kone, Stach, Kamada, Wirtz, Barella, Veiga, Ugarte, Florentino Luiz, maybe I’m forgeting some names that are ready to move this summer and some of them may be better or as good as Bellingham in the long term.”

TaliJashariLFC in the comments.

“For all that money that was saved for Bellingham, can easily get players like ugarte, thurram, kone, enzo le fee, mount (year left), lavia.”

Rahul in the comments.

“I’d be happy with Mount, McAllister/ Caicedo and one more midfielder. If you can get a CB and a RB on top of that, that’s a great window.”

YTLFC in the comments.

There are certainly plenty of alternatives out there for Liverpool to pursue and they will want to get their business done early.

The issue for many, if the reports are accurate and it is not a transfer tactic, is that Liverpool have stagnated by waiting for a target who everyone knew would cost a pretty penny and by turning their back now, it would have all been for nothing.

The Reds need to find stability in their transfer dealings once more, other clubs will know to strongarm them and Liverpool can ill afford to waste time nor money.

Chelsea in Talks to Sign Gavi Amid Barcelona Dispute

Reports suggest that Chelsea are in discussions to sign Barcelona wonderkid Gavi, who will be available on a free transfer in the summer. The midfielder is considered one of the best young players in the world and has been a key part of Barcelona’s success this season, helping them to a 13-point lead at the top of the Spanish league table. In 2022, Gavi won both the Golden Boy and Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best U21 player in the world, beating out competition from Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka.

However, off the pitch, Gavi is currently involved in a contract dispute between his club and La Liga. Last September, he signed a new contract to keep him at the Camp Nou until 2026, which included a clause that would allow him to leave as a free agent if Barcelona had not registered him as a first-team player by the end of the season. The club eventually did so in January, but La Liga has not recognised this due to Barcelona being in breach of their salary limit rules.

The two parties are currently disputing the matter legally, and Gavi has been forced to revert back to the No.30 shirt. He is said to be unhappy with the situation he now finds himself in, and Chelsea are reportedly looking to take advantage of this by offering him a huge contract. The Premier League side has met with Gavi and his family to discuss a summer transfer, and the meeting is said to have gone well.

Chelsea could also tempt Gavi with the prospect of playing under former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, who remains the favourite to take over at Stamford Bridge. In the meantime, interim boss Frank Lampard will be in the dugout on Wednesday night when Chelsea takes on Real Madrid in the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. Gavi and Barcelona will next be in action on Sunday when they travel to Getafe.

If Chelsea manages to sign Gavi, they will add another young superstar to their already massive and highly expensive squad. The move could also help them in their pursuit of a top-four finish in the Premier League and success in the Champions League.

Chelsea in positive transfer talks with Gavi’s agent to exploit Barcelona ace’s contract issues.

According to reports, Chelsea have held talks with the agent of Barcelona’s young star Gavi, with initial discussions said to have gone well. The Blues’ director of football, Christopher Vivell, is said to have met with the 18-year-old’s representatives, and another meeting is scheduled for the coming weeks as Chelsea looks to push forward with the deal.

Gavi only recently signed a new contract at Barcelona, which will keep him at the club until 2026. However, due to financial problems, the Catalan giants are unable to register him as a first-team player. If this issue is not resolved, Gavi could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season as his contract will be void.

Despite this, Barcelona remains relaxed about the situation, and Gavi himself does not want to leave the club. However, the player is reportedly frustrated over the way the matter has been handled. Chelsea could offer much more than Barcelona would be able to and could hand Gavi a huge signing-on fee. Additionally, if the West Londoners were to bring in ex-Spain boss Luis Enrique as manager for next season, this could further sweeten the deal.

Barcelona has been effectively placed under a transfer ban by LaLiga until they sort their finances out. Ten players could reportedly leave the league leaders as they need to raise £178million. The likes of Ansu Fati, Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha, and Ousmane Dembele could all depart.

Gavi is considered a wonderkid, having played 87 times for Barcelona and been capped by Spain on 19 occasions. The La Masia product made his debut aged just 17 and has been touted as one of the brightest prospects in European football.

If Chelsea were to secure Gavi’s signature, it would be a significant coup for the club. The midfielder has shown tremendous potential and could be a key player for the Blues for years to come. Additionally, with Chelsea looking to rebuild their squad under new manager Thomas Tuchel, Gavi could be a vital addition to the team.

However, it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will be willing to let go of one of their most promising young talents. The club has a history of producing world-class players, and Gavi could be the latest in a long line of stars to emerge from the La Masia academy.

Overall, it is clear that Chelsea is keen to sign Gavi and is willing to offer him a significant package to lure him away from Barcelona. Whether the deal will go through remains to be seen, but it is clear that the Blues are serious about securing the young midfielder’s services.
