Minnesota Vikings Quarterback Nick Mullens Looks to Bounce Back Against Green Bay Packers Defense
After a disappointing performance in a 30-24 loss to the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Nick Mullens is eager to redeem himself in Week 17 against the Green Bay Packers. However, facing the Packers’ defense may not be as challenging as it seems.
The Packers’ Struggles on Defense
The Green Bay Packers’ defense has been under scrutiny this season, ranking among the worst in the NFL. Coordinator Joe Barry’s job status has become a topic of discussion for reporters covering the team. The defense currently ranks 25th in EPA (Expected Points Added) per play this season and 23rd over Barry’s three-year tenure. These rankings have dropped significantly from the team’s previous seasons under coordinator Mike Pettine.
Season-Best Performances by Opposing Quarterbacks
The Packers’ defense has allowed opposing quarterbacks Tommy DeVito, Baker Mayfield, Bryce Young, and Kirk Cousins to post their season-best marks in EPA per pass play. This trend suggests that Mullens may have a favorable opportunity to bounce back and deliver a strong performance against the struggling Packers’ defense.
A Potential Turning Point for the Vikings
Despite Mullens’ struggles against the Lions, the Vikings have a chance to turn their fortunes around against the Packers. The Carolina Panthers, led by quarterback Bryce Young, had not finished any of Young’s 13 starts with positive EPA until their game against the Packers. The Panthers finished with a plus-11.0 EPA, compared to their negative EPA against other opponents.
With these factors in mind, Mullens and the Vikings are hopeful for a bounce-back game and a chance to exploit the vulnerabilities of the Packers’ defense. Only time will tell if they can capitalize on this opportunity.
