Oxford United Football Club has received a significant boost in their plans to construct a new stadium. Currently, Oxford United plays their matches at the Kassam Stadium, which has a capacity of 12,500 and was built in 1997. However, their lease on the stadium, owned by Firoka, expires in 2026.

In October 2023, they released details of their plans to relocate to a site known as the Triangle near Kidlington, within the Cherwell district. The proposed stadium would have a capacity of 16,000 and the club is aiming to secure a remarkable 250-year lease for the site.
In May, Oxford United received permission for the construction of the new stadium after signing a provisional legally binding agreement with Oxfordshire County Council. However, final approval was dependent on gaining permission from Cherwell District Council. Fortunately for the club, on Monday, Oxford councillors voted in favor of a motion to “support” their plan. This positive outcome means that a planning permission application could be submitted to Cherwell District Council as early as next year.
Mary Clarkson, a Labour member of the council, expressed her support for the project, stating that the council wants the club to have a “secure” new stadium that offers numerous improvements. Paul Peros, chairman of the OxVox independent supporters’ trust, emphasized that the new stadium would enhance infrastructure and bring vitality to the area. He urged the club and councils not to let the objections of a vocal minority hinder this opportunity for progress.
However, opponents of the stadium move have raised concerns about the loss of green belt land as well as potential issues with traffic and pollution. These concerns highlight the need for careful consideration and planning to address the environmental impact of the project.
