While other Afcon stars have already left their domestic clubs, Manchester United has managed to secure permission to keep Onana for their FA Cup third round tie against Wigan on January 8. However, according to the Daily Mail, United has now decided to retain Onana for their crucial Premier League clash with Tottenham on January 14.

This means that Onana will leave Old Trafford immediately after the match against Ange Postecoglou’s side, which kicks off at 4:30pm. He will then embark on a seven-hour flight to Cameroon’s camp before their match against Guinea begins at 5pm the following afternoon.

Positive Reception from Fans

Many United fans have expressed their admiration for Onana’s dedication to the club. One fan wrote, “That’s crazy though,” while another commented, “It’s good to see how dedicated he is to the team.” A third fan simply stated, “Fair play to him.”

Throughout Onana’s absence, United is expected to utilize summer signing Altay Bayindir, who joined from Fenerbahce but has yet to make his debut for the club.

The special agreement allowing Onana to play in the Tottenham match is believed to be a result of an earlier understanding that he would not feature for Cameroon at AFCON. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Onana left the squad camp after a falling out with manager Rigobert Song. However, he was later recalled for the September internationals due to his impressive performances during Inter Milan’s run to the Champions League final last season.

If Cameroon fails to qualify from the group stages, Onana may return to Old Trafford without missing any game time.
