Nicola Docherty, Scotland full-back, has revealed that talks are ongoing about the possibility of switching from white shorts due to period concerns. This comes after England have decided to switch to blue for the World Cup finals, while the Republic of Ireland squad have chosen to stick with white. Docherty stated that “if only one player feels uncomfortable, that’s enough for us to change it”. There may be issues in choosing darker shorts if there is a clash with the opposition’s colours.
Docherty is joined by seven of her Rangers club-mates in Pedro Martinez Losa’s squad, including uncapped 17-year-old midfielder Emma Watson. The defender said Watson reminds her of close friend and former Glasgow City team-mate Erin Cuthbert, and praised her for being “very mature” and “confident in everything she does”. Docherty believes Watson has the potential to make an impact at international level, describing her as “very talented” with “great work-rate”.
Rangers captain Kathryn Hill and midfielder Chelsea Cornet will also be hoping for first caps in the forthcoming friendlies against Australia and Costa Rica. Docherty described Hill as “the ultimate leader from the back line” and revealed that Cornet is nicknamed “the midfield maestro” due to her work-rate and strong running.
The Scotland full-back considers the upcoming friendlies to be “massive tests”, and will be hoping to make a statement with her team’s choice of shorts. The decision is still being discussed, but Docherty insists that “if we as a team feel we want to change, we will definitely change it”. The match against Australia will take place at Cherry Red Records Stadium in London on Friday 7th April, with coverage available on BBC Sport website.
