Newcastle start questioned as Bournemouth draw makes it one win from seven, with Darren Bent saying he ‘certainly expected more’ from ‘underwhelming’ Magpies

Newcastle have just one win from their opening seven Premier League games following a 1-1 draw against newly-promoted Bournemouth.

The result leaves the Magpies 10th in the table, with talkSPORT host Darren Bent flagging up their poor start to the season ahead of the game.

Record signing Alexander Isak scored from the spot to cancel out Philip Billing’s opener and take a home point, but Bent has been expecting more from the world’s richest football club.

“For all the optimism and excitement around Newcastle they currently sit 11th in the Premier League,” he said ahead of kick-off.

“It has been underwhelming, I certainly expected a bit more.

“I know injuries have played their part as well but I would have expected Newcastle to register a couple more wins than what they’ve currently got.”

Eddie Howe would have been doubly disappointed with dropped points against a promoted side, considering it’s one he used to manage.

The Englishman left the Cherries in 2020 after eight years in the dugout, joining Newcastle as the first signing of their Saudi Arabia-backed era.

And after a tricky start a productive January transfer window saw a complete turnaround, steering the side away from a relegation battle and to mid-table safety.

But Bent feels without a few more positive results his reputation could change.

Asked if Howe is under pressure, the former England striker said: “No I’d give it until at least Christmas because you’ve got the World Cup coming up as well.

“But if it gets to Christmas time, I don’t think he’ll be under pressure but I think people will be looking thinking ‘come on Eddie let’s get a few more positive results.”
